What is Horsepower?
Have you ever wondered about the meaning of the concept of horsepower that everyone has heard of? Horsepower, which almost everyone who drives or researches cars knows, is a unit of measurement used mostly to determine how much power electric motors and automobiles can draw. Although it is actually a very simple concept, horsepower has managed to become very complicated through popular conversations. You will now learn the truths about horsepower, about which everyone says something different. Something someone from the public said stuck with me. They said, "A car with 100 horsepower means the power produced by 100 horses." That made me laugh, honestly. It's not like that. Because everyone thinks of it this way, everyone thinks it's correct. Horsepower is most related to automobiles, but the history of this concept goes back a long way.
What is it for?
The person who first used this concept, whose English name is HorsePower and translated into our language as "at gücü" or "beygir gücü", was James Watt. This man, who worked on and improved steam engines, is a successful personality from Scotland. When asked about the power of the machine he was going to sell, he didn't know what to say when introducing it to his customers. For this reason, since automobiles were not very common at that time, he wanted to explain it using horses, which everyone used. Watt, progressing in this direction, improved himself and conducted research on horses. Carefully observing horses carrying loads of different minerals, James noticed in the results of his measurements that one horse could move 45 kilograms of coal approximately 1110 centimeters in about 1 second. Based on this experiment, he made calculations. Using the concept of Weight x Distance, the horse did 50 kilograms/meter of work. However, for a reason no one knows, he increased this experiment by 50%. He completed it to 75 Kilograms/Meter. Now, in our day, 1 horsepower is measured in this way because of this experiment.
